Here's How Much Tesla's New Affordable Electric Cars Cost

**Tesla Launches Affordable Versions of Model 3 and Model Y to Broaden Market Reach**

Tesla has unveiled more affordable versions of its popular electric vehicles, the Model 3 and Model Y. These newly introduced variants are not completely new models, but rather streamlined versions of the refreshed Model 3 and Model Y. By removing non-essential features and trimming back on some luxuries, Tesla is able to lower the entry price for prospective buyers, making the dream of owning a Tesla more accessible than ever before.

**Why This Matters Now**

The timing of Tesla's move is significant. The electric vehicle (EV) market has grown rapidly in recent years, but high prices remain a barrier for many consumers. According to June 2024 data from Kelley Blue Book, the average transaction price for a new vehicle in the United States is $49,077. For electric vehicles, that average jumps to $57,245. While this is a slight decrease from the market peak at the end of 2023, it is still more than $10,000 higher than five years ago. By introducing lower-cost options, Tesla is responding directly to consumer demand for more affordable EVs.

**The Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive**

The new entry-level Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive is priced at $39,990. Despite the lower price, it still offers an impressive EPA-estimated range of 321 miles on a single charge. The car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, powered by a 69 kWh battery that delivers around 300 horsepower. Tesla achieved cost savings by using one fewer battery module than the higher-end trims, which also results in a vehicle that is about 5% more efficient than the previous Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive.

Inside, Tesla has simplified the Model Y’s interior. The design features an open-concept center console reminiscent of the Cybertruck, and the trim is textile rather than premium materials. Seat and steering wheel adjustments are now controlled via the central touchscreen, eliminating most physical buttons. The Model Y Standard comes with a seven-speaker audio system, auto high beams, and a mix of textile and vegan leather seats. While the front seats are heated, the rear seats are not. Most of the adjustments, such as for seats, mirrors, and the steering wheel, are now manual rather than powered.

Tesla has also removed some features found in more expensive trims to keep costs down. There is no rear passenger screen, no HEPA filtration system (just a standard particulate and odor filter), and the mirrors are manually folding. The panoramic glass roof now uses a fabric headliner for better insulation. Standard wheels are 18-inch, with 19-inch wheels available as an upgrade. The Model Y Standard offers 75 cubic feet of cargo space, a 3,500-pound towing capacity, and a curb weight of 4,061 pounds. Charging is supported up to 225 kW, and Tesla claims that
