OpenAI’s Sora App Surges in Popularity with Android Launch and New Creative Features

OpenAI’s Sora app, an AI-powered social media platform for creating and sharing videos, is experiencing explosive growth following the release of its Android-compatible version. According to a report by Appfigures, the Android version of Sora was downloaded an impressive 470,000 times within the first 24 hours of availability. This figure is four times greater than the downloads achieved by the app’s iOS debut in September. The iOS version, despite being restricted to North America and requiring an invite code, surpassed one million downloads within its first five days. With the removal of the invite code and the expansion into more countries, the surge in Android downloads is not unexpected, but it still highlights the app’s remarkable popularity and momentum.

Sora’s rapid ascent comes amid a wave of updates and feature additions by OpenAI. The company is clearly investing heavily in the platform, aiming to transform it from a novelty into a robust tool for both casual users and professional creators. Bill Peebles, who heads the Sora team at OpenAI, recently outlined several upcoming enhancements for the app. These include new creation tools, expanded social features, and the much-anticipated Android support that has now arrived. OpenAI has also announced plans to collaborate with industry unions such as SAG-AFTRA, along with other celebrities and public figures, to manage the risks associated with generating potentially inappropriate or illegal videos, including deepfakes—a challenge facing many AI-powered media platforms.

The Sora app is now freely available for download on the Google Play Store, making it easy for new users to begin exploring its capabilities. At its core, Sora enables users to generate AI-powered videos, often using the likenesses of people or objects in a feature called “Cameos.” Initially focused on people, the Cameo feature is expanding to allow users to incorporate pets, toys, or even generated characters from other Sora videos. This opens up creative possibilities for users to feature their dog, guinea pig, or favorite stuffed animal in their AI videos. In keeping with seasonal events, Sora has also introduced a number of Halloween-themed characters.

To facilitate content discovery and drive engagement, Sora’s interface is being updated to highlight trending Cameos in real-time, similar to popular features found on other social media platforms like TikTok’s For You page or Instagram’s Explore. This move is likely to encourage viral content and foster a vibrant creative community.

In addition to content creation enhancements, Sora is rolling out basic video editing tools. The first of these allows users to stitch multiple clips together directly within the app, marking a shift towards a more comprehensive creative suite. Bill Peebles has hinted that more advanced editing capabilities are on the horizon, suggesting that Sora aims to be more than just a platform for short, spontaneous videos—it wants to appeal to professional creators who require more sophisticated tools for crafting longer and better-planned productions
