Thanksgiving Meal Kits: A New Way to Host Without the Stress

Cooking a full Thanksgiving meal for friends and family can be one of the most intimidating challenges for any home cook. The holiday is notorious for stories of culinary disasters—burnt turkeys, collapsed desserts, and kitchen mishaps abound in pop culture and real life alike. However, a new crop of Thanksgiving meal kits is changing the game, offering a convenient, stress-free option for anyone who wants to serve a home-cooked feast without the marathon of planning and shopping.

Recently, I decided to take the plunge and host Thanksgiving for my extended family. Instead of braving crowded grocery stores and juggling dozens of recipes, I opted for a meal kit: the $200 “Chef's Table Thanksgiving” box from Sunbasket, a well-known meal delivery company. The box arrived at my door two days before the meal, packed with everything I needed to prepare a seven-dish spread: a nearly 3-pound turkey roast, mashed potatoes, cranberry compote, miso-sage roasted carrots, brussels sprouts with pecorino and pancetta, apple-fennel-sausage stuffing, Gruyère black-pepper biscuits, rich turkey gravy, and a ginger apple crisp for dessert.

This approach isn’t about microwaving a frozen dinner. The meal was genuinely home-cooked, with ingredients mostly from scratch and detailed instructions for each dish. Sunbasket—and similar meal kit companies—are targeting people like me: home cooks who want to deliver a special meal, but who find the scale and complexity of Thanksgiving overwhelming.

The Sunbasket Experience

Until now, I had managed to avoid the challenge of hosting a major holiday meal, thanks to family traditions and a preference for Friendsgiving potlucks or dining out. But this year, the Sunbasket box offered a chance to return the favor and cook alongside my mother. The kit arrived organized and insulated, with each dish portioned into labeled bags and a stack of recipes on top. Orders placed by November 19 would arrive in time for the holiday, but it's wise to allow two days for turkey thawing and to clear out fridge space to store the ingredients.

While the kit spared me the planning and shopping, it was not exactly labor-free. Sunbasket suggests about 2.5 hours of prep, but, as with many meal kits, the real time commitment was closer to three hours with two people working in a well-equipped kitchen. If you’re solo or have just one oven, expect to spend four hours or more. Most of the labor is in the sides: making stuffing from toasted baguette cubes, dicing and sautéing produce, crisping pancetta, and assembling layered dishes. The mashed potatoes are the exception—they come ready to heat, but they're actual potatoes, not powdered.

Convenience is key here. Many of the sauces and seasonings arrive pre-mixed, and the turkey is brined and ready for the oven. The instructions help with timing,
